Take This Job and...Find a New One? (Becoming a PI in Ontario)

5 o’clock is slowly rolling around, and you find yourself counting down the minutes until you get to escape from the humdrum boringness that is an office job. 9-5, Monday to Friday, 5 days a week. Yeah, the consistency is nice, but man is it getting to be a bore… Same non-

sense day-in and day-out, never any excitement to keep you stimulated.

How many years can one person stare out the same window (if you’re lucky to even have a window to longingly stare out of…), doing the same dead-end job, and still maintain some resemblance of sanity at retirement… You need something new, something exciting, something that’s always changing, and is rarely the same thing 2 days in a row.

And then you see it, an online ad for a Private Investigator course and a description of the duties and responsibilities of an investigator!!! Surveillance, locating people, locating missing equipment, background checks on people for their potential new employers, undercover work for companies, even interviewing people and gathering witness statements!!! A different job for every day of the week practically!!!

Clean criminal record? Over the age of 18 and eligible to work in Canada? Good with computers? Enjoy finding new technologies and processes to make your job simpler? Seeking a little freedom in how you do your job? Then maybe this is your calling!! The life of a Private Investigator is rarely if ever boring, constantly evolving and changing, and anything but your typical 9-5.

Finding an agency that offers a provincially recognized online course is a great way to start the beginning of what can become a very rewarding, fulfilling, and challenging career as a Private Investigator. It provides you the flexibility of doing the in-class portion on your own time at your own pace. A list of Ministry of the Solicitor General authorized training providers is available at www.mcscs.jus.gov.on.ca/english/PSIS/Training/TrainingProviders/PSIS_training_providers.html

The Ministry mandated Private Investigator syllabus calls for 50hrs of class time as well as an additional 29hrs of pre-reading (studying). These hour requirements highlight one of the biggest benefits to doing the Private Investigator course through a ministry-approved online course provider, the ability to do it on your own time at your own pace.

Upon completion of the course, you will be issued a certificate of completion and a training completion number. Book your exam at your nearest Service Ontario that offers testing. Upon passing your exam with a grade of 77% or better, you can then apply for your license through Service Ontario. Be prepared to provide copies of 2 valid pieces of Government identification, testing completion number, a passport photo, Guarantor information for filled out, signed and dated by the guarantor, and last but not least, the easiest of all the requirements… the appropriate payment type for the license.

The fact that this is a highly government-regulated industry that deals with a lot of sensitive subjects and personal information places the emphasis on the importance of credibility, honesty, integrity, and professionalism of those whom are employed in it.
